Stories

I've been writing stories in my spare time, since 1998. As a way to record my ideas, some of my dreams, and to explore reality.
I've written a few stories now, but not many people have read them. My hopes of getting any of them published, are few and far between. So I thought it best to put them here, and allow people read them absolutly free of restriction.

My only real want of going to publisher was really to have an editor seriously look at it and say whether they are good to read, and if I have problems with my writing style, storyline or such. Maybe you can tell me!

Ok, now with any story, people will find that they either like it or loathe it, depending on their own interests. So... I'll try to give a short writeup of each story so you know what it's about without having to read through it first.

Chronolapse(01-May-2000)ñ
I started writing a fantasy story about the end of the world. The end of 1999 and the beginning 2000 seems to bring that out a lot, except that it didn't work. So I tried again, changing the focus of the story, no more end of the world! Whoo Hooo! But I've worked this back in subtly, but it isn't part of the story line any more, which makes the story less of a stereo-type. Here is the entire story so far, parts 1 and 2.

Part 1 : Basically Lost(01-May-2000)ñ
The start of the Chronolapse story with its original title. I thought it best to give the series a title, whilst giving titles to each part.Dillon John LaCroix steps from a busy New York street into nowhere. His thoughts turn to weird parallel universes, or even a movie set. But reality is harsher, and a little more relaxed than the civilized world he was just in. He winds up partnering himself because he has no money with a warrior type woman, so he can earn his way along to find out more about where he is and how to get but to civilized America.

Part 2 : First Mage(04-Oct-2000)ñ
The story continues, and it has evolved a little. Okay, so the end of the world did happen. Did I miss something...?The story starts with Lilith, against a bitter harsh backdrop of executions and mob killings. But she has no interest in this, as she is looking for a man. She's of the age, and her parents know it. They understand she needs to stand on her own two feet. She finds love, but it is ever so momentary as it turns against her to become a nightmare and carries a harsh sentence. Until she finds herself with this strange man called Dillon. Dillon has many revelations of his own, as he discovers he's not only no in Kansas any more as Kansas hasn't existed for thousands of years. On a search for more information, Lilith goes with Dillon and Shaanstar for the mysterious Adepts, into a region where a war is starting to boil.

Part 3 : Power Within(08-Sep-2001)ñ
Currently working on the third part.

Starship Pirates(10-Sep-2001)ñ
How many times have your watched someone become so successful with something, you just thought, "I want to do that". I had that thought when I saw the success of Harry Potter. The inspiration started this story, though the intended audience may not be as young (still working on keeping it clean). This isn't the whole story, it is just a beginning. This is also my first attempt at Pure Science Fiction. Trying hard not to blur the reality with stuff that is completely made up, but using ideas and concepts that are far out futuristic and possible.A family travel to a new colony planet with their 8 year old daughter, to start a new life. But on the way there is trouble.

Infinite Twilight(03-Nov-1999)ñ
A short story prompted by the end of the world scenarios. Except the end of the world has already happened.A lonely boy named Klaur, finds his memories of life are much shorter than everyone else's. His society is man up of only men, living out a endless existence in small dirty towns, where living day to day it a common thing. But Klaur's best friend, whom he calls Father leads him into strange paths to find a friend of a long dead friend. Klaur's world it changed forever by who he meets and what he discovers about his real world, and the things he never knew.

69 degrees(17-Sep-1999)ñ
I had this idea one time that just came to me. "69 degrees". What did it mean? Angle? Latitude, or Longitude? Or temperature? And a temperature could be Kelvin, Celsius (or Centigrade) or Fahrenheit. The connotations for 69 could be sexual, or relate to Horoscopes a. The meaning would well be anything. So I set out writing a story, semi-futuristic, but definitely sci-fi, with sexuality. What I have has nothing to do with any degrees, unless it's been room temperature in Fahrenheit, which happens to be about 20.5 degrees Celsius. The story revolves around Joseph Blair. For some reason he wakes up in a strange place, locked in a cage barely big enough to stand in. Remembering back, he thinks at first he's been abducted by aliens, or Chinese Communists. But as he get used to his surroundings, and is placed in the 'dark room', which brings to life memories that are best left forgotten, he suddenly finds himself somewhere else. It gets weirder by the minute for Joseph, as he explores his own consciousness for answers, and finds himself falling in love with the beautiful woman he meets. But it's never always clear cut to Joseph, until the journey rolls to an unanticipated stop. And then he has to sort everything out from the chaos.

VR Interactive Game Worlds(07-Jan-1999)ñ
I dedicated myself to write a series on VR. From what I've seen, computers are growing increasingly complicated every day. As well as faster, better, and more widely spread. But the one big thing to come to the public's attention recently, in the 1980's actually, was Virtual Reality. It was impressive, but limited. Since then, it has improved somewhat. You can now purchase VR headset for you PC, and play games, but the headset is bulky and heavy (a real pain in the neck), the screen only provides limited vision and resolution. You are limited only to stereo sound from headphones strapped to your head, and the interface is usually a grip or a glove which you point around, like an irritated chimpanzee. So I wanted to describe the perfect VR system. One that provided a realistic visual perception without distortion from an interface. Sound that wasn't limited to the frequency range from headphones, but you could also hear high picked wails or low throbbing through your entire body. Not only that. But to have all your other senses available, of taste, smell and touch. And what I think of as the sixth sense, equilibrium. Your inner-ear and sense of balance, that you also get from muscle control. You can usually tell when your hanging upside down, even with your eye's closed, because you can feel the pull of gravity, as you strain to keep you arms by your side, rather than hanging past your head. But how do you get all this, with something you strap on? The only solution is to interface with the human brain. This need not be so intrusive, as on recent films. The best actual one I have seen of this technology, is from the Red Dwarf TV series, from the UK. But technology today is actually paving the way, with simple patches on the skin, detecting brain waves and changes in thought patterns. It shouldn't' be too long, before a full scale version could read commands sent through the nervous system. Doctors right now are able to wire up nerve bundles, reattach severed limbs, and even re-wire paraplegics to direct their leg muscles by moving their arms. But the last stage of creating a VR system, is not just the realism in the programs and games. But the ability to interact with other people, next door, and around the world. The technology for this is here, and now, in the Internet. It only now needs to be faster.

Book 1 : The Notorious Mutantñ
This is the first story, which I used to depict my idea of VR, in it emergence, and a few teething problems. But historically, I set it after previous VR development, ones that had been working, if some what limited.A science fiction story of the future, set around 2017. Kate Phillips is one of the first people to make use of the new VR technology in Australia, and she soon makes a close friend with a guy on the other side of the country. While he romances her on the luxury liner Titanic, a single person begins planning the destruction of all technology, to bring humankind to a form of justice for all the wrongs its done to the planet. Kate and her friend Tony become embroiled in the movements of the self proclaimed UNA bomber, out to destroy technology. Eventually a show-down occurs in the most popular VR game, bringing everything to a standstill for the unexpected finale.

Book 2 : Worlds Apartñ
This second story, goes deeper into the actual realms of game play, by showing a particular game, its problems, its good points, and how the players cope with their lives in relation to the game. This story continues almost where the last one left off. But it does not follow the exploits of Tony and Kate in their burgeoning relationship, but focuses upon one individual who was also affected by the Hacker's charm. Nicola was the sultry Aphrodite, but she now looks for a new game to play, to quell the memories of not quite relationship. She finds new friends, all who are female, each also with their own problems. As she falls head first into the new game, making a big mistake, but staying in and enjoying the game. Problems occur when one of her new friends has to leave, and a new player, a guy, joins in. He seems strange at first, until the game becomes a race to survive and win.

An Escape From Reality(28-Apr-1999)ñ
I had this dream on March 25, that I found to be unusual. It was about waking up as a different person. Sort of like the tale of switching bodies, except this was different. It was about waking up as a different gender, and a much younger age, and my previous presence never existed. It was as if I woke up in a world where I no longer existed, and I was a different person. But the person I existed as, had a life behind them, years of living. People knew me, but not the old me from the memories I still had. I spent hours rationalizing this dream, trying to understand it. So I wrote it as a short story, putting down my ideas, and what I thought and felt, and gave the people I dreamt about names.A tale of waking up as a different person. Escaping one reality, into another. For what purpose did this happen?

The Long Weekend(17-Dec-1998)ñ
Here is some details about my first story. Actually it was a test bed of sorts, (no pun in tended, as you would find out if you read the story), but it was meant as a platform to relearn my writing skills, since I hadn't done any serious writing since Year 10. And never more than 1500 words at the most. So I put fingers to keyboard, and let the imagination loose, and let the storyline direct itself. It turned out to be very loose. Some of my own fantasies crept in, but only a few, but the rest just sort of sprung out from the woodwork, things I've either seen in pictures, read about, or heard from someone. So I must warn you, this is a very explicit story. It should have a rating on it. X or something. But in writing this, I've found out what I should be trying to do when writing, and what I shouldn't be trying to do. This is a good example of what not to write, and how not to go about it.The Long weekend is about a woman who meets a guy at work, and on a whim, and partial desperation, asks him out on a camp for an upcoming long weekend. Just him and her, alone. At times he is confused, but tries to be honest with himself and her. And she is wanton, and teasing, but they work things out, in the strangest of ways during the weekend. But afterwards, it's not quite over.

The Long Weekend addition(17-Dec-1998)ñ
I started into additional material on the Long Weekend story without realizing it. I had been tapping away at the keys, liking my story too much, that I wanted to put an ending on it, or a resolution. And it kept going. So finally, I just stopped. It was only meant to be a test after all, not a full on novel. And reading back over it, I didn't think the story was very realistic. Who was I kidding, it was just trash! Ok, so if you really liked the first part, here's the rest. But I did stop quite suddenly, so you'll find all sorts of typographical, spelling and grammar errors, and don't be surprised if I never add any more to it.Scott moves in with Janet, and then the fun really begins. Through the course of several weeks, they get up to mischief, and start planning another weekend. In the middle of it all, Janet's parents turn up for their monthly ritual meeting for dinner. Now they get to meet Scott.
